Keynote Speakers

Susan Murphy, PhD, MBA, RN

Dr. Susan Murphy is known for her “wit and wisdom” as a keynote speaker, author and leadership consultant. She has been an executive in two Fortune 500 Corporations, serves on the adjunct faculty of Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, and has performed international consulting and speaking for 20 years to a variety of industries. Susan has written numerous books including: In the Company of Women, Maximizing Performance Management, Conversations on Success and Leading a Multi-Generational Workforce. In the Company of Women, co-authored with Dr. Pat Heim, has been featured on “Good Morning, America”, Time magazine, USA Today.com, and BBC. It was selected as Harvard Business School’s “Book of the Month” and has been translated into several languages. Dr. Susan Murphy’s degrees include a BSN, MBA, and PhD in Organizational Systems.



Rena Shephard, MHA, RN, RAC-MT, C-NE

Ms. Shephard is president of RRS Healthcare Consulting Services in San Diego, providing long-term care consulting and training to facilities, corporations, and attorneys nationwide. The founding chair and current executive editor of AANAC, she is a nationally recognized expert and popular speaker on resident assessment and care in nursing homes. She has been a consultant to several CMS projects, and she is a member of the MDS 3.0 development team. She also served as a Director of Nursing Services in nursing homes for 14 years.



Debra Saliba, MD, MPH

Debra Saliba is the Anna & Harry Borun Chair in Geriatrics at UCLA and Director of the UCLA Borun Center. Dr. Saliba is a practicing geriatrician whose research has focused on creating tools and knowledge that can be applied to improving quality of care for vulnerable older adults. She was the principal investigator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ MDS 3.0 Revision and Evaluation project and the collaborative VA MDS Validation project. Dr. Saliba’s research in quality of care and vulnerable populations has received awards from the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, VA Health Services Research & Development, and the American Geriatrics Society. She serves on the Board of Directors for the American Geriatrics Society and the California Association of Long Term Care Medicine.





Thomas Dudley, MS, RN (Invited)

Mr. Dudley has been with CMS since 2000 and is a Health Insurance Specialist in the Division of Chronic and Post-Acute Care in the Office of Clinical Standards and Quality. Duties include the Nursing Home clinical performance measures and overseeing the development and implementation of MDS 3.0. Past CMS projects have included the development of the many databases on www.medicare.gov.



Ellen M. Berry, PT (Invited)

Ellen is the Senior Clinical Policy and Research Analyst, Division of Institutional Post-Acute Care with CMS and is the lead analyst for SNF clinical issues with regards to payment and policy. She has over 15 years of experience as a physical therapist and rehabilitation manager and has spent more than 10 years in the long-term care and skilled nursing facility settings. She has received multiple awards for her work on SNF issues, post-acute care payment reform demonstration and nursing home value based purchasing. Current responsibilities include being CMM lead for the CMS MDS team and SNF swing beds, CMM for the post-acute care payment reform demonstration, Chronic Care Policy Group lead for Therapy Resource Group, clinical lead for RUG refinements and policy and payment related to SNF PPS and Division Senior Policy Advisor for Long-Term Task Force and Nursing Home Value-Based Purchasing Subcommittee among others.



Karen C. Schoeneman, MPA (Invited)

Ms. Schoeneman is a senior policy analyst and project officer with the CMS Division of Nursing Homes, which has the responsibility for survey and certification of nursing homes. Karen is co-lead for the long-term care survey process, and is the lead for the Quality of Life requirements. She manages the research contract for the demonstration of the new Quality Indicator Survey (QIS). She is a nationally recognized expert in culture change and is the CMS lead for this topic. She is one of the founding members of the Pioneer Network and is also an Eden Associate.





Francis Battisti, PhD, LCSW

Noted professor, speaker, consultant, and author, Dr. Francis L. Battisti offers individuals and organizations a pathway to explore their potential and move toward desired transformation. His national reputation in the field of healthy aging and enhancement is manifest in his work with major organizations. Francis has been a long-term care consultant for over twenty years.

Elizabeth A. Ayello, PhD, RN, ACNS- BC, CWON, ETN, MAPWCA, FAAN

Elizabeth is an international expert in wound, ostomy and continence care. A past president of the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP), Dr. Ayello consulted with CMS on the revised guidance for Tag F314 and developed the CMS education slide deck Section M Skin Conditions for MDS 3.0.

Cheryl Ben-David, PT, DPT

Cheryl is the Executive Director of CONSULTcbendavid, providing rehab management/support to skilled nursing facilities and drawing on over 20 years of clinical and management experience directing rehab departments in long-term care programs, maximizing budgets and implementing proper staffing ratios. Currently, she presents at conferences for administrators and rehab clinicians on rehab department enhancements.

Sophie Campbell, MSN, RN, CRRN, RAC-CT

Sophie A. Campbell, MSN, RN, CRRN, RAC-T, Manager, Senior Healthcare Consultant, joined Parente Randolph in 1999 in the Long Term Care Services Division. Ms. Campbell is involved with long-term care client engagements that include operational audits and remediation, survey preparation and remediation, MDS accuracy audits and development of data collection processes, staff education related to multiple topics, Performance Improvement systems development and implementation using the Quality Indicator reports and documentation audits, education and streamlining. Ms. Campbell has prior experience as a Director of Nursing, Nursing Supervisor and Clinical Supervisor.

Sheila Capitosti, RN-BC, NHA, MHSA

Sheila’s in-depth knowledge and experience is concentrated in all aspects of nursing home operations, clinical processes, quality improvement services and clinical program development. She is a frequent speaker at national and state conferences and has authored numerous articles making her a seasoned, wellrounded speaker.

Kenneth Daily, LNHA

Kenneth is the president of Elder Care Systems Group (ESCG) and a nationally recognized leader with wide-ranging experiences in advancing long-term healthcare. Mr. Daily has nearly 25 years’ experience in the long-term healthcare industry, both as a healthcare professional as well as in management and consulting. Kenn currently leads ECSG, a long term healthcare-focused consulting firm, which specializes in facility management, quality improvement, productivity and education. Kenn is a well-regarded and entertaining speaker who is a member of the Ohio Health Care Association Board of Trustees. Kenn was recognized recently by the AHCA as a Rising Star—Future Leader for this commitment to the longterm healthcare profession.

Lisa Hohlbein, RN, BS, RAC-CT, MSCN

Lisa Hohlbein, RN, BS, RAC-CT, MSCN and Manager-Clinical Consulting, VCPI has over 19 years of experience in the health care industry including acute care and skilled nursing settings. Her areas of expertise include clinical reimbursement, long-term care and sub- acute care assessment and operations, leadership and team building, and development of educational tools. Her experience also includes performing and overseeing various reimbursement reviews for Medicaid and PPS in multi-state, skilled nursing facilities.

Stephanie Kessler, Senior Manager, RAC-CT

With over 17 years of clinical experience in long-term care, Stephanie has extensive expertise in the areas of operational performance analysis, RAI process, staff training, and reimbursement systems. Her in-depth knowledge is concentrated in state and federal regulations and all aspects of the RAI process.

Carol Maher, RN-BC, RAC-CT

Carol has worked with the MDS since the early 1990s. She has served as chairman of the new RAPS and format committee for the RAP workgroup, the Technical Expert Panel for Care Planning, and the Technical Expert Panel for QMs for MDS 3.0. She is an AANAC board member and membership committee chair.

Marilyn Mines, RN, BC, RAC-CT

Marilyn has 44 years of nursing experience, with 33 of those years in long-term care including 13 as a DON and 20 as a consultant. She is a national speaker on numerous topics and hasbeen published in McKnight’s Long- Term Care and MDS, PPS, and Billing Alerts. Marilyn is on MDS Alert’s editorial board and has presented for Eli’s audio educator and HcPro.

Sandy Reifsteck, RN, MS Ed, FACMPE

Sandy has 30 years in leadership roles in an integrated system, including a nursinghome and retirement center. She is currently with the Institute for Healthcare Communication as Coordinator, Office of Development and Quality Outcomes. She also serves as adjunct faculty for the University of Illinois, College of Nursing and College of Medicine. Sandy speaks nationally and publishes in healthcare journals.

Annette Sanders, BS, RN

Ms. Sanders interacts daily with LTC stakeholders and LTC organizations. She brings over 20 years of experience as an educator and consultant to eldercare communities on such topics as clinical practices, organizational leadership, and person centered care initiatives.

Janine Savage, RN, RAC-CT, CHC

Janine has responsibility for Clinical Operations, Information Technology, Clinical Operations and Resident Accounts for United Methodist Homes, an LTC organization with five campuses in NY and PA. She is the Project Manager for an integrated software implementation project. Janine has presented at numerous conferences including AAHSA, AHIMA, NYAHSA and AANAC.

Barbara Thomsen, CDM,CFPP, RAC-CT

Barbara is the MDS/OASIS Automation Education Coordinator for the state of Iowa, where she is involved with case mix reimbursement and Iowa Medicaid Enterprise partner Iowa (Quality Improvement Organization). Barbara is a member of AANAC and the Dietary Manager’s Association, is a national DMA Keynote speaker and is a published author of nutritional/MDS LTC articles.

Janet Watton, CTRS, Eden Educator

Janet has worked in long-term care for over 16 years in a variety of roles and is an Eden Educator for the Eden Alternative. Her areas of expertise include Alzheimer’s programming, culture change, behavior management, and development of educational tools. She has presented at over 80 facility, regional, state, and national workshops.
